David James Brooks from Truro, Nova Scotia, was a self-taught artist and the first Mi'kmaq artist collected by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

David painted to inspire strength in his people, drawing from the past to express resilience and hope for the future. His vivid colours and crisp lines depict Mi'kmaq legends, connecting past strength with present challenges and suggesting a path forward.
